CM Guide: Terms
About:
I thought to make this guide while working on only the third chapter of Cyborg Memoirs. While asking for critiques, my friend had asked me a few days earlier why exactly I didn't capitalize saiyans. I replied saying that I thought of saiyans as just a general race of people, like the words humans or earthlings, and not so much in the sense of a nation of people, like Europeans or Americans. I thought to myself afterwards that there are probably going to be at least a good handful of other...quirks others might find in my writing, stuff that they wouldn't expect to see (or don't see) in a world based off of the Dragonball universe. This story is based off of many years of role-playing, and some things from my role-playing universe have become second nature to me. So...I figure, if I need to explain something in greater detail, this page will be the place to do it.
rx-IN
This is a monitoring/maintenance device that plugs into an invisible jack on the back of Eighteen's neck. Whether or not Seventeen crafted it himself or he took it from the remains of Gero's lab is unknown. It serves to keep Eighteen fairly normal feeling and to monitor her various internal systems while she recovers from the destroyed state she woke up in the rubble from.

Nanomachines
Nanomachines, in this universe, are not that dissimilar from the real life nanomachines being created by scientists today. The prefix "nano" is used when something is very tiny. As a measurement, it is one-billionth of a whole. And that's real freakin tiny - the size of cells or smaller. Currently there are scientists working to develop nanomachines that will be able to heal our soldiers on the battlefield, destroy cancer cells, build smaller processors and batteries for our computers and other electronic devices, and weave special fibers that are only a nano in width. The current and potential technology of the nano is awe-inspiring. In science fiction, regarding cyborgs, nanos are often mentioned as the things inside cyborgs that maintain them and provide them with special abilities, and that's how you will find me using them in this story.

Passing the Guard
This is a term used in many ground-based/grappling/submission martial arts which refers to passing a person's guard against you in order to gain a superior position. There are many ways to pass the guard, and it is one of the most important techniques one will learn (and will continue to learn as they train). More information (with pictures YEAH!) is available here (PDF file).

Arm Bar
This is another term I've taken from my Gracie Jiu Jitsu experience. It's a sweet move that involves catching a person's extended arm and bending it (gradually if you're nice) backward, using the elbow as a point of fulcrum. Getting caught in an arm bar can be incredibly uncomfortable, and if enough pressure is applied in a serious situation, you can break a person's elbow capsule. It's easy to learn, fun to do to your friends, but takes a while to learn to apply quickly and adeptly. Recently I saw a character in Blade: Trinity apply a sa-weet armbar to Triple H's character during a fight - a perfect demonstration. For a bit more information and pictures of an arm bar, go here. Another good picture of an arm bar can be found here.
